IELTS – International English Language Testing System. It is an examination that examines ones English Language skills in terms of spoken and written English, if one wishes to study or work in a country where English is the primary language of communication. One needs to prove his/her skill in English to the University Admission Officers and Visa Officers.
The IELTS test examines one’s English listening, reading, understanding, speaking skills through two test formats, namely IELTS Academic and IELTS General. One who wishes to pursue his/her higher education abroad or go for professional registration in an English-speaking environment can take IELTS Academic. IELTS General training is for those who want to migrate to English-speaking countries like Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Canada. The United States of America uses the same system of testing the English-speaking skills of those people who wants to migrate there for academic and work purposes.
The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment jointly designed and now own the IELTS test system.

Anyone above the age of 16 is eligible for the IELTS examination. If one wish to pursue his/her higher studies or migrate to UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada for professional purposes, he/she can take this test.
Pattern & Syllabus
The IELTS Exam tests one’s English Reading, Writing and Speaking skills with two types of tests, IELTS Academics and IELTS General training. The time duration of the IELTS exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Candidates have to take all the reading, writing and listening test without any break. Listening, reading and writing test comes following a set order.
In the listening section, around 30 minutes is dedicated for the candidates to answer. Candidates are given to hear four pre-recorded audio tapes and they are required to answer a number of questions based on the audio they hear. The conversations are based on everyday life and an educational setting, with two monologues which will be on an academic subject and the other on social context.
Candidates will be given 15 minutes in total for this section. The examiner will speak to the candidate on a range of topics such as family, studies, work, interests, etc. The candidates will then be given around a minute to prepare on those topics and they will have to speak on it for two minutes. The examiner will also ask more questions to the candidates on the same topic that they speak on.
In this section candidates should dedicate 60 minutes in answering. For IELTS Academic tests taking candidates, they will have to read long texts taken from different sources which will be descriptive in nature suitable for those who wish to appear for university courses. For IELTS General Test taking candidates, they will get extracts that are related to life in general.
There will be 40 questions from this section. The main motive behind taking this test is to ensure the reading skills of the candidates and how well they are able to grasp the meaning and the writer’s opinion as well as the logical argument behind it.
Candidates should dedicate 60 minutes in this section, where they are to write in formal, semi-formal or informal style. The test assess the candidate’s ability of describing or summarizing given texts, data, arguments, graphs, figures etc, depending on the type of test the candidate has chosen.
Exam Booking Process 2018
Once the aspiring candidate decides what type of IELTS test he/she wishes to take, he/she should check the available exam dates. Candidates can download application form and register for the convenient date in the city of their choice. They can visit the British council or IDP websites or visit their offices and register for the exam by paying registration fees. Candidates will be contacted via email and will be informed about the venue on the preferred date.
The result will be available 13 days after the candidate takes the test. The result is available online or in a test report form. The test center can also provide the result preview by SMS.
